Bulls Drop MAC Opener, 3-1

Higgins scores Buffalo’s lone goal; Banwell tallies an assist

OXFORD, OH -- The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team opened conference play Friday afternoon, falling to the Miami (OH) University RedHawks, 3-1. Freshman Caitlin Higgins (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) scored her third goal in two games and sophomore Jenessa Banwell (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park) inked her first assist of the season for Buffalo.

The RedHawks struck first, just 2:49 into the contest when Miami’s Aimee Prevallet sent a header past UB goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor). The goal, Prevallet’s first of the season, came on a deflected header from Kathleen Vistica, originally off a cross from Katie Boyd.

The Bulls kept the game close through the first half and UB eventually tied things up shortly after the half, at the 58:49 mark, when Banwell connected with Higgins who lofted a header over RedHawk goalkeeper Krista Pace.

The RedHawks, however, owned the ensuing offensive swing, as Vistica picked up a duo of goals in the last 22 minutes of the contest, the first sneaking past Coron at close range off of a feed from Boyd, while the second found its way to the back of the net via a header, again assisted by Boyd.

Buffalo goalkeeper Coron notched five saves in the contest, while Miami’s Pace inked seven on the afternoon.

With the setback, the Bulls fall to 3-5-0, (0-1 MAC) while the RedHawks stand at 4-4-1, (1-0 MAC).

Buffalo will be back in action, on the road, on Sunday, Sept. 24 to take on the Ball State Cardinals in a Mid-American Conference match-up. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
