Women’s Soccer Fights GW To Double OT

Bulls upended 2-1 in 102nd minute

WASHINGTON, DC – The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team took on the George Washington Colonials Friday afternoon in Washington, DC, dueling GW to a 2-1 double overtime setback. Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, ON/A.N. Myer) scored UB’s goal and goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) finished the contest with six saves.

The Colonials got on the scoreboard first in the match, at the 37th minute as GW’s Kerry Philbin headed in a corner kick from Lauren Kelly. The Bulls battled back, however, as Vescio earned a penalty kick in the 40th minute. Vescio missed the PK, but gathered her own rebound and chipped the ball into the right corner out of the reach of GW goalkeeper Amie Kern.

Neither team was able to score in the second half or during the first overtime period. It wasn’t until two minutes into the second overtime that Keara Mehlert netted the game winner for George Washington, a hard shot from inside the box just over Coron’s right shoulder.

Brooke McCalla (Pickering, ON/Dunbarton) finished the match with four shots, one on goal while Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) and Jocelyn Cibiniskas (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) each finished with one shot on goal for the Bulls.

Buffalo will continue its weekend sojourn through the Nations Capital on Sunday, as the Bulls are slated to take on the Howard University Bison. Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
