Women's Soccer Weekly Release

Bulls Open MAC Season With Win Over Kent State

For the third consecutive year, the Bulls opened their Mid-American Conference season with a win. UB defeated Kent State 4-2 at Kent, a team that had beaten UB each of the previous two seasons.

Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) led the charge for UB, scoring twice, and Jennifer Keefe (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) added the game-winning goal. Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) scored the other UB goal, moving her further up the UB career scoring list.

UB Finishes Second at Stony Brook Tournament

UB placed second at the Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express Tournament this past weekend. The Bulls opened with a 2-0 win over host Stony Brook. Starting goalkeeper Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) pitched the shutout for UB, her first of the season. Paula Listrani added to the scoring with the second goal after the Seawolves recorded an own goal for the first UB score.

In the championship game, the Bulls jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead. The three UB goals came from Nicole Olszewski, Jennifer Keefe and Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero North Syracuse). Jacksonville came out strong in the second half and scored three goals of their own to record the 4-3 win.

Three Bulls Named to All-Tournament Team

The Bulls had three players named to the Stony Brook All-Tournament team for their performances over the weekend. Nicole Olszewski scored a goal and recorded an assist in the game against Jacksonville and Paula Listrani was named to the team after scoring a goal in the 2-0 win over Stony Brook. Sophomore Emily Cox was also named to the squad for her performance against Stony Brook when she recorded four saves and the shutout. Cox was the only goalie from the four participating teams selected to the All-Tournament team.

Buffalo Players Generous with Assists

The Bulls have been generous in setting up teammates for goals this year. UB players have scored 21 goals this year, and have dished out 17 assists on those goals. Paula Listrani has scored three of the unassisted goals, two of which came on penalty kicks. In the assists department, eight different players have recorded an assist this year. Leading the way in that category is freshman Nicole Olszewski, who has five assists. She needs just one more to move into the records books for most assists in a season.

Closing in on the Record

The Paula Listrani record watch is on. Listrani is on pace to set the UB career records in both goals scored and points scored. She currently has 38 goals, good for fourth place. Nora Bender is the career leader with 43 goals. In points, Listrani currently has 91 career points, tieing her with Lori Perillo for third best all-time. Nora Bender is the career leader with 102 career points. In addition, Listrani could become just the third UB player, man or woman, to surpass the 100-point mark for a career (Bender, Steve Butcher).

UB Soccer to be Broadcast on Adelphia

The UB women's soccer team will have one of their upcoming home games broadcast on television by Adelphia Cable. The Bulls game against MAC foe Central Michigan on September 29, will be broadcast on tape delay by Adelphia, on channel 18 (HTTV) locally.

Upcoming Action...

After six straight road games, the Bulls return home for a four-game, conference homestand. UB will host Ohio University on Friday, September 22, at 7 pm. Last year, the Bobcats beat UB in the first round of that MAC Tournament, 2-1 in overtime on UB's home field. The weekend will be capped off when Buffalo hosts Marshall on Sunday, September 24, at 1 pm.
