Women's Soccer Falls to Jacksonville

UB Finishes Second in Tournament

STONY BROOK, NY — The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team finished second at the Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express Tournament after losing to Jacksonville 4-3 Sunday afternoon. The Bulls beat host Stony Brook 2-0 yesterday to advance to Sunday’s championship game with Jacksonville.

Buffalo jumped out to the quick lead, scoring all three of their goals in the first half. Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored the first goal for UB off an assist from Emily Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) just three minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. Jacksonville responded with a goal in the 12th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Jennifer Keefe (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) would give UB the lead back as she scored on an unassisted goal at the 17:46 mark for a 2-1 lead. Later in the half, Olszewski assisted sophomore Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) for the Bulls' third goal of the half and a 3-1 halftime lead.

Jacksonville came out strong in the second half as Tournament MVP Stine Kloster scored two of her three goals in the game during the Dolphins' second half comeback. Jacksonville scored once in the 59th minute and again in the 70th minute to tie the score at 3-3. Kloster then netted the game winner at the 73:41 mark for the 4-3 Jacksonville win.

Three UB players were named to the All-Tournament team. Nicole Olszewski, who had one goal and one assist, Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena), who had one goal, and goalkeeper Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport), who recorded a shutout in the Bulls win over Stony Brook, were all honored with selection to the all-tournament team.

The Bulls fell to 5-3-0 on the season and will return home for two weekend MAC games. UB will host Ohio on Friday, September 22, at 7pm, and then host Marshall on Sunday at 1pm. UB is 1-0 in MAC play after winning earlier this week at Kent State.
