Women's Soccer Secures 3-1 Victory

Bulls Use Two Second-Half Goals To Earn First Conference Win

BUFFALO, NY - Sophomores Devon Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of Holy Names) and Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored goals 1:09 apart in the second half to propel the University at Buffalo women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Kent State in its first Mid-American Conference match of the year. Buffalo improves to 2-3-0 (1-0-0 MAC) on the season while Kent State falls to 1-4-0 (0-1-0 MAC).

Buffalo's Emily Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) opened the scoring in the first half when she knocked a pass from senior Paula Sinclair (Hamilton, ONT/Barton Secondary) past the Kent State goalkeeper. However, the Golden Flashes did waste time answering, as Lauren Caminati responded with a goal of her own :29 later. The score remained tied until Emily's twin-sister Devon Russell put the Bulls on top for good at the 64:18 mark. Olszewski, who assisted on Devon Russell's goal, then tacked on another UB goal just over a minute later to deflate the Golden Flashes hopes.

Junior Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had a strong game in goal for the Bulls as she recorded seven saves. Buffalo outshot Kent State, 17-15, and held a slight edge in corner kicks (4-2).

The Bulls will host Akron in a rescheduled match on Tuesday, September 18, at 2 p.m. before they travel to Toledo (Friday, September 21) and Bowling Green (Sunday, September 23) for pivotal conference games next weekend.
