Buffalo, NY- The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team prevailed in a physical non-league contest Friday afternoon, scoring a 3-2 triumph over the Canisius Golden Griffins. UB freshman Caitlin Higgins (Lancaster, PA/ Penn Manor) scored two goals, while sophomore Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/ Dunbarton) picked up two assists and junior Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/ Clarence) added a goal and an assist for the Bulls.

Buffalo got on the board first early in the first half, when Higgins found the back of the net on a pass from Griffiths just outside of the goal box. The Bulls then took a two goal advantage over the Griffs on a one-touch goal by Griffiths off of a perfect feed from McCalla with 33:04 remaining in the first half.

Canisius then capitalized on a corner kick, as Rebecca Shupe bent the ball into the top corner of the pipes to score an unassisted goal for the Griffs, making the score 2-1.

Shortly after the half, Higgins struck again as the freshman gathered a pass from McCalla to score her second goal of the contest, extending the Buffalo lead, 3-1. The Griffs answered, as Stephanie Karst locked in on the far post, scoring Canisius’ second and final goal of the match.

Buffalo goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/ Victor) tallied 10 saves on the afternoon while Canisius goalkeeper Jenna Gage collected nine saves of her own. With the victory, the Bulls snap a three game losing streak and improve their record to 3-4-0 on the season, while the Griffs drop to 2-6-0.
