Women’s Soccer Battles MaineBUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team fought through 90 minutes of physical soccer in its first game of the 2007 UB Classic but came up short on Friday night under the lights, as the Bulls were upended by the University of Maine Black Bears, 3-0.
Facing wind, rain, and strong Maine squad, Buffalo held the Bears scoreless until Hailey Blackburn scored on a one-touch, rebounded ball just out of the reach of UB goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) at the 8:26 mark to put Maine ahead, 1-0. UB battled for the majority of the first half but Maine scored on a penalty kick, with just over five minutes remaining in the first period to take a 2-0 lead into the half. Emerging from the half, Buffalo was able to mount offensive pressure, but never got the ball between the pipes. Maine put another goal on the board at the 74:12 mark, as Kelsey Wilson took advantage of a UB cleared ball and launched a shot from 20 yards out.
The Bulls would not quit, however, as Brooke McCalla (Pickering, ON/Dunbarton) was able to acquire a penalty kick at the tail end of the contest, just as the rain became borderline torrential. Coron finished the game with five saves for the Bulls while Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, ON/A.N. Myer) lead the team in shots with three. Buffalo held the advantage in corner kicks, with 6 compared to Maine’s two while Maine drew 10 fouls to Buffalo’s three. In the first game of the evening, St. John’s beat Vermont, 2-0. The four-team UB Classic will resume on Sunday, as St. John’s is slated to face Maine at 10:30 am with UB scheduled to take on Vermont at 12:30 pm. All games will be played in UB Stadium. |
