Bulls Open MAC Play With Win Over Northern Illinois

UB shuts out Huskies for first win of the season

DEKALB, IL - The UB women's soccer team opened Mid-American Conference play with a 1-0 win over Northern Illinois in DeKalb, IL on Friday night. It was also the Bulls' first win of the season after tying three of the first four games of the 2002 campaign.

Buffalo's lone goal was scored by Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) in the 73rd minute. It was Pfeffer's first goal of the season. UB goalkeeper Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams) needed to make only one save to earn her first career shutout.

Despite the close score, the Bulls dominated the contest, outshooting the Northern Illinois 27-11 and holding the Huskies to only one shot in the first half.

Although it wasn't all good news for the Bulls as Devon Russell (Averill Park, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) was assessed two yellow cards (equating a red card) in the game. Per NCAA rules, the Bulls' captain must sit out Buffalo's game against Western Michigan on Sunday.

With the win, the Bulls improve to 1-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the MAC. Northern Illinois falls to 1-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.
