Women's Soccer Starts MAC Season With A Win

Bulls Beat Kent State 4-2

KENT, OH — After losing to Kent State in an overtime game each of the last two years, the UB women's soccer team finally got revenge, defeating the Golden Flashes 4-2 Wednesday afternoon to open the Mid-American Conference portion of the season. UB scored twice in each half, and was led by freshman Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), who scored two goals in the game.

Olszewski started the scoring with a steal and a breakaway, netting the first goal at the 9:28 mark and giving UB a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) would score off a free kick from just outside the box to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead. Kent State would get on the board late in the first half, scoring in the 42nd minute to cut the lead to 2-1 before halftime.

In the second half, the Golden Flashes wasted no time, and scored in the first two minutes of the second half as Bethany Sanker scored off a crossing pass from Cassi Johnson, and tied the game at 2-2. The Bulls would take the lead for good in the 55th minute on a goal from senior Jennifer Keefe (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy). Emily Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) sent a long cross to Keefe who beat a defender one-on-one to score the game-winning goal. Olszewski would add her second goal of the game in the 61st minute, which gave the Bulls some insurance and the 4-2 victory. Jaime Adams (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) recorded four saves on goal for UB in the win.

It was the conference opener for both schools as Buffalo won their MAC opener for the third-straight season. UB is now 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAC while Kent State drops to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the MAC. The Bulls will be in action again this weekend at the Stony Brook Tournament. UB will face Stony Brook on Saturday, September 16 at 2:30 pm to open and play either Jacksonville or Belmont on Sunday.
