Women's Soccer Zips by Akron

Dannecker, Fage score in Bulls 2-0 win in MAC opener against Zips

AKRON, OH - Senior Jenny Dannecker (East Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy) scored the game-winning goal in the 16th minute and added an assist to help the University at Buffalo's women's soccer team to a 2-0 win against the University of Akron at Lee R. Jackson Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulls (2-4 overall, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) improved to 6-1 in MAC season openers with the win. Their only season-opening loss since joining the MAC in 1998 came last season when they lost to Western Michigan 2-1 on Sept. 12.

Dannecker scored the first goal after dribbling through the Akron defense to score her second goal of the year. That was all the scoring in the first half, as Akron (2-4 overall, 0-2 MAC) limited UB to five shots in the half. Buffalo didn't allow an Akron shot.

Freshman Kathleen Fage (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) added her second goal on the season on a dish from Dannecker in the goal box two and a half minutes into the second half.

Dannecker's five points is tied for the team lead with senior Arielle Korczykowski (Derby, NY/ Lake Shore), who had two goals and an assist in Friday's 4-0 shutout of Canisius.

The Zips managed just four shots on the Bulls' defensive core, all in the second half. Senior Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams) was forced to make just three saves in her second consecutive shutout for the Bulls.

Buffalo fired 12 shots at Akron goaltender Crystal Tabor, who made five saves.

The Bulls host Eastern Michigan on Friday at 7:00 pm in their MAC home-opener. Last year, the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in Ypsilanti, MI.
