Buffalo Drops Conference Opener to Western Michigan, 2-1
BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Western Michigan in the opening game of Mid-American Conference play on Friday night at RAC Field. Western Michigan scored two first-half goals and survived a late rally by the Bulls to hold on for the victory. The Broncos got on the board first in the 24th minute when Jessica Pattison took a pass from Chantel Robinson and shot it past UB goalkeeper Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams). Amy Letzgus scored in traffic off a corner kick with only nine seconds remaining in the first half to give Western Michigan a 2-0 lead at the break. The Bulls rallied in the second half as Emily Russell (Averill Park, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) scored her conference-best sixth goal of the season in the 72nd minute, off a pass from freshman Jessica Roesch (Centennial, CO/Grandview), to cut the lead to 2-1. However, UB couldn't capitalize on several late scoring chances and were defeated for the first time in five games. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 4-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the MAC. Western Michigan
improves to 2-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference. Buffalo will return to action on Sunday afternoon when
it hosts Northern Illinois at 1 pm at RAC Field. |
