Weekend Warriors

Buffalo was upended twice in its quick trip to the Puma Classic held in Irvine, CA, falling 4-1 to eventual tournament champion UC-Riverside on Friday, Sept. 8 and dropping another match, 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 10 to the host school, UC-Irvine. The Bulls finished fourth in the four team tournament, with San Diego State rolling into second place and UC-Irvine checking into third place, respectively.

Duo Dubbed With Tourney Honors

Senior Jessica Roesch (Centennial, CO/Grandview) and sophomore Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/ Dunbarton) were recently named to the All-Tournament team at the 2006 Puma Classic, hosted by UC-Irvine. Roesch recorded an assist on the lone goal scored by the Bulls in the two games UB played in CA. The assist was Roesch’s first point of the season and the fourth assist of her career. McCalla, meanwhile, played and started both games of the tournament, amassing two shots, both coming in the Bulls’ 1-0 setback versus UC-Irvine.

Great Start For Griffiths

UB junior forward Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/ Clarence) ended the second week of the season (all games through Sept. 5) in a tie for first place in the MAC for total points, total goals and goals per game. In the Bulls’ first four games of the season, Griffiths gathered six points on three goals, tying her with Central Michigan’s Jacquie Lacek in all three categories. Additionally, Griffiths was in a five-way tie for points per game, with 1.5.

Up Next

After a challenging westward weekend excursion, the Bulls are set to host cross-town rival Canisius on Friday, Sept. 15 at 4:00 pm. Just the second home game for Buffalo this season, the contest will serve as part of a doubleheader, as the UB men’s soccer team will play host to regional rival, St. Bonaventure at 7:00 pm.
