Women's Soccer Weekly ReleaseBulls Swept in Syracuse Orange Classic UB suffered two losses at the Syracuse Orange Classic this past weekend, despite playing well. The Bulls lost to host Syracuse on Friday night, 2-0. It was the first time UB had been shutout this season. The Bulls played well but did not capitalize on the scoring opportunities. Goalkeeper Jaime Adams (Rochester NY/Greece-Athena) recorded five saves in the game. In the second game of the tournament, UB lost a tough overtime game to Rutgers. Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) scored for Buffalo in the 14th minute for a 1-0 lead. It was her fourth goal of the season and 36th of her career. Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) assisted on the goal, giving her four assists this year in the first five games. Rutgers came back to tie the score before the end of the half with a goal in the 33rd minute. Both teams went scoreless in the second half, forcing an overtime. Rutgers capitalized quickly, scoring the game-winner just two minutes into the overtime period for the 2-1 win. Bulls Ready for MAC Season to Begin The Bulls will start their Mid-American Conference schedule this week when they travel to play at Kent State on Wednesday, September 13. Buffalo is 0-2 all-time against the Golden Flashes, having lost each of the last two seasons. The past two years, UB has finished off the conference season at home against Kent State, losing 1-0 in overtime both times. UB hopes to continue their conference opening success. In two seasons in the MAC, the Bulls are a perfect 2-0 in conference openers, defeating Marshall 3-1 in 1998 and beating Toledo 3-2 in overtime last year. Passing the Ball Around The Bulls have been generous in setting up teammates for goals this year. UB has scored 13 goals after their first five games, and have dished out 10 assists on those 13 goals. Paula Listrani has scored the only three unassisted goals, two of which came on penalty kicks. In the assists department, seven different players have recorded an assist this year. Leading the way in that category is freshman Nicole Olszewski, who has four assists in the first five games. She needs just two more this year to move into the records books for most assists in a season. Bulls Defense Dominates in Opening Weekend The biggest key to the Bulls' first three wins of the season was the defensive effort by the team. In the first game against Canisius, the Bulls allowed just three shots total and one goal that came late in the game with UB up 7-0. Against Duquesne, the UB defense held the Dukes to just two shots and only one shot on goal in recording a shutout and allowed just one goal against Niagara. The defensive effort has been led by Heather Collins (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), who has played every minute so far this year as the Bulls' sweeper. Senior Cheri Rogers (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) has also started in the back, along with freshman Erin McGarry (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), who played well in her first three collegiate starts. Freshmen Devon Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) and Zita McKenna (Oakville, Ontario/Iroquois Ridge) have also made significant contributions to the defensive side. Sophomore Megan Hosey (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) has been injured but is starting to see more time to help on the defensive side as well. Upcoming Action... The Bulls will begin the Mid-American Conference schedule with a midweek game. UB will play Wednesday, Septemeber 13, at Kent State at 4 pm. UB then travels to Stony Brook this upcoming weekend for the Stony Brook Tournament. The Bulls will face Stony Brook on Saturday, September 16, and then on Sunday will face either Jacksonville or Belmont.
