Women’s Soccer Drops Tough One In Overtime

UB Falls to Rutgers 2-1 at Syracuse Orange Classic

SYRACUSE, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team dropped their second straight game, falling 2-1 to Rutgers in overtime at the Syracuse Orange Classic. The Bulls lost to host Syracuse 2-0 on Friday night in the opening day of the tournament.

Against Rutgers, UB got on the board early in the first half. Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) connected with the back of the net at the 14:20 mark to give UB the early lead. It was the fourth goal in the first five games for Listrani, as she now has 36 on her career, moving into fourth on the school’s all-time list. Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) assisted Listrani on the goal for her fourth assist of the season.

The Scarlet Knights would come back later in the half as Lisette Brandao scored at the 33:27 mark to tie the game 1-1 at halftime. The game remained tied in the second half as neither team could find the net. In sudden death overtime, Rutgers would break through the tough UB defense and Shannon Nagle would score the game winner past UB goalie Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport), who recorded six saves on the day. The winning goal came at the 91:58 mark and gave Rutgers the 2-1 win.

Buffalo, now 3-2 on the season, will continue its long road stretch later this week. The Bulls will open up their Mid-American Conference season on Wednesday, September 13, when they travel to play at Kent State. Next weekend, UB will play at the Stony Brook Invitational.
