Bulls Conclude Play At Niagara Classic

Brooke McCalla, Courtney Mac Vie named to the All-Tournament Team

LEWISTON, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team suffered a minor setback in its final game of the Niagara University Classic on Sunday afternoon in Lewiston, falling to the American University Eagles, 3-0.

Despite tallying the same number of shots as AU for the game, each team finishing with 17, the Bulls were unable to close in on the Eagles’ three, early, first-half goals.

American scored first at the 13:51 mark on an unassisted goal by Krystn Hodge. The Eagles then increased their lead under a minute later, as Jess Cole fired a shot from 30-yards out, just out of the reach of Buffalo goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor). AU scored again at 22:16 when Kelsey Brasher found the back of the net from the top of the box.

Despite a frustrating first half, the Bulls were proficient in constructing scoring opportunities in the second half, outshooting the Eagles 11-5 and topping AU in corner kicks, 6-3.

Coron finished the match with four saves while Melissa Klein (North Bellmore, NY/Mepham) ended with three shots, two on goal and Brooke McCalla (Pickering, ON/Dunbarton) finished with three shots, one on goal. Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean), Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, ON/ A.N. Myer) and Nikki Wilson (El Paso, TX/Franklin) each contributed two shots for the Bulls.

At the conclusion of the tournament, McCalla and senior Courtney Mac Vie (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) were recognized for their efforts. McCalla finished the tournament with two goals, both in Buffalo’s 3-1 win over Binghamton on Friday while Mac Vie was part of a Buffalo defense that allowed just four goals over the weekend.

UB will return to action on Friday, Sept. 14 when the Bulls host Maine at 7:00 pm at UB Stadium as part of the UB Fall Classic.
