Emily Russell Named MAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week
CLEVELAND, OH - On Monday, University at Buffalo senior Emily Russell (Averill Park, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) was named the Mid-American Conference's Women's Soccer Player of the Week. It marked the second straight week that a Russell from UB won the award as her twin sister Devon Russell (Averill Park, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) took home the honor last week. The award capped a career week for the senior attacker. She scored five of the Bulls' six goals in a two-game sweep in the UTEP Invitational. She notched both goals in a 2-1 win over host UTEP on Friday night. She netted a hat trick and added an assist in UB's 4-1 win over Grambling State on Sunday. Russell also had an assist in Buffalo's 3-0 win over Niagara on Wednesday night. Russell became the second Bull in a week to record a hat trick as Natalia Crofut (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois) also tallied three goals in UB's 3-0 win over Niagara on Sept. 3. Prior to last week, the last Buffalo women's soccer player to score a hat trick was Elizabeth Pfeffer who scored three times against Detroit Mercy on Sept. 10, 1999. With five goals and 12 points on the young season, Russell has already matched her season-high totals for goals and points set in 2000. At 4-1-0, Buffalo is off to one of its best starts in recent years. The Bulls will open
Mid-American Conference play on Friday night when they host Western Michigan at 7 pm at RAC Field. |
