Bulls Complete Sweep of Local Rivals

Having already defeated Canisius to open the season, UB defeated Niagara 4-1 on Labor Day to complete a sweep of the two local rivals this season. It was the third straight year UB has beaten both teams and the fifth time in the last six years they have swept the two.

Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) scored the first UB goal on a penalty kick, and Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored the game-winning goal before the end of the first half. In the second half, twins Devon Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) and Emily Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) each scored a goal to help give the Bulls the 4-1 victory.

UB Opens With Two Wins in Own Tournament

The Bulls opened the 2000 season hosting the Buffalo Invitational and UB came away with two wins to start the season. UB opened against Canisius and rolled to a 7-1 win. Freshman Emily Russell scored two goals, and twin sister Devon Russell scored one goal in the win. Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero North) and Paula Listrani both scored goals as well and Nicole Olszewski added two assists in the win.

In the second game, UB recorded the first shutout of the year with a 1-0 win over Duquesne. Paula Listrani scored the lone goal on a penalty kick. The PK was awarded when Elizabeth Pfeffer was taken down by a defender in the box. Goalie Jamie Adams (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) recorded her first shutout of the season in the game as well.

Bulls Defense Dominates in Opening Weekend

The biggest key to the Bulls' first three wins of the season was the defensive effort by the team. In the first game against Canisius, the Bulls allowed just three shots total and one goal that came late in the game with UB up 7-0. Against Duquesne, the UB defense held the Dukes to just two shots and only one shot on goal in recording a shutout and allowed just one goal against Niagara.

The defensive effort has been led by Heather Collins (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), who has played every minute so far this year as the Bulls' sweeper. Senior Cheri Rogers (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) has also started in the back, along with freshman Erin McGarry (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), who played well in her first three collegiate starts. Freshmen Devon Russell and Zita McKenna (Oakville, Ontario/Iroquois Ridge) have also made significant contributions to the defensive side. Sophomore Megan Hosey (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) has been injured but is starting to see more time to help on the defensive side as well.

Goalkeepers Strong Again in 2000

The Bulls have utilized both Jaime Adams (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) between the pipes so far this season and both have had great success.

Cox started the opener against Canisius, recording two saves and giving up one goal late in the game, after the outcome was already decided. She also got the start against Niagara, again allowing just one goal and recording five saves in the 4-1 victory. Adams started against Duquesne and recorded one save in the 1-0 shuout win. These two keepers, in addition to the strong team defense, have been an integral part of UB's early success.

Upcoming Action...

The Bulls will take part in the Syracuse Orange Classic this upcoming weekend. UB will face the host Syracuse on Sept. 8 and then face BIG EAST opponent Rutgers on Sept. 10. The following week, UB opens its MAC schedule with a trip to play at Kent State on Wednesday, September 13.
