Burlington, VT-- Using two first half goals to its advantage, the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team collected its second win of the season, blanking winless Vermont 2-0 on Friday afternoon on Centennial Field in Burlington, VT. With the win, the Bulls improved to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Catamounts dropped to 0-2-1.

Buffalo junior Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/ Clarence) continued an offensive hot streak for the Bulls, scoring UB’s first goal 10:54 into the contest. Griffiths settled a long pass from junior Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/ Olean) and found the back of the net when she beat Vermont goalkeeper Elizabeth Bradley in a 1-on-1. The goal was Griffiths’ third in two games while the assist was Turner’s first of the season and second of her career.

Buffalo struck again in the 17th minute of the first half when junior Kelley Vander Mallie (Penfield, NY/ Penfield) connected with sophomore Jenessa Banwell (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park) to give the Bulls a 2-0 edge. Banwell’s one-touch volley into the goal was her first goal of the season and the second of her career, while Vander Mallie’s assist stands as her first of the season and the second of her career.

Buffalo goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/ Victor) chalked her second consecutive shut-out in as many games, stopping six shots on the afternoon while Vermont’s Bradley tallied five saves of her own.

The Bulls continue a weekend sojourn to New England on Sunday with a non-conference game against Brown in Providence, RI. Game time is 1:00 pm.
