On Friday, August 28, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team opened their 2009 season against the Pittsburgh Panthers at Pittsburgh's Founders Field. The Bulls fell to the Panthers 1-0 with senior goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) making 12 big saves to keep the game close.

Coron stopped two shots in the first half and ten shots in the second half to keep the Bulls in the game. Lindsey Bailey (Burlington, Ontario/Assumption) had Buffalo’s first scoring chance 18 minutes into the game with a shot to the wide right. The Buffalo attack stayed quiet until late in the second half. Aubrey Stahl (Loveland, CO/Mountain View) had a chance to score with a shot off the crossbar with less than 15 minutes remaining. Freshman teammate Stephanie Velez (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) earned the team's only shot on goal with less than ten minutes to go. The Panthers out shot the Bulls 21-3.

Bulls Can't Get By Colgate

The Bulls dropped a game to Colgate last weekend, falling to the Red Raiders 2-0. The Bulls had 11 shots, six of which were on goal, but were unable to score in the ninety minute game. The first half was scoreless for both teams, with the only Buffalo shot on goal coming from Jenifer Kern (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) halfway through the first period. Colgate scored both of their goals in the second half, the first coming at the 68:42 mark of the game. The Red Raiders scored an insurance goal just six minutes later to secure the win.

Bulls Fall to Blackbirds in Double Overtime

The UB women's soccer team dropped their second game of the weekend to Long Island, 1-0, falling to the Blackbirds in a double-overtime thriller at LIU Field on Sunday afternoon. The game was scoreless for the first 100 minutes, but LIU put one past Coron just 57 second into the second overtime to clinch the win. Coron’s five saves in the game moves her up to second on UB's all-time career saves list with 348 saves. Bailey and Stahl each finished the weekend with a team high four shots, but the Bulls have yet to see a goal in their first three games of the season.

Up Next

The Bulls will take another road trip this weekend, traveling to Central Connecticut State for a match on Friday, September 4 and then playing a game closer to home against St. Bonaventure on Sunday, September 6. Both games are set for 1 pm.
