Women’s Soccer Upended In Season Opener, 4-3

Lindsey Bailey scores first career goal, Heidi Griffiths adds a goal and an assist

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team was narrowly upended in its season opener by Big-4 rival Niagara on Friday night at UB Stadium, falling to the Purple Eagles 4-3.

Despite the setback, Buffalo received solid contributions from many of its players, including freshman Lindsey Bailey (Burlington, Ontario/ Assumption). Bailey notched the first goal of the game and the first goal of her career at 17:53 when she collected a pass from Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Nikki Wilson (El Paso, TX/Franklin) and blazed by a Niagara defender to deposit the ball between the far side of the pipes.

Niagara answered, however, as the Purple Eagles scored a goal of their own to even the score just before the half. NU then extended its lead in the second half, putting two more on the board to lengthen its lead, 3-1.

With just over 18 minutes left to play, the Bulls mounted offensive pressure, sparked by junior attack Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer). Vescio, last season’s leading goal scorer, scored her first goal of 2007 when she fired a shot from the top of the box past Niagara keeper Sarah Stephens. Vescio’s goal was assisted by junior Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) and senior Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean). Three minutes later, Buffalo evened the score when Griffiths scored from the top of the box on a pass from Christina Olsen (Otego, NY/Clemson University) and McCalla.

Shortly after the Bulls mounted the comeback, Niagara struck again, as Chiara Greco scored the one-touch, eventual game winner.

The Bulls will continue the preseason portion of their schedule on Sunday when the squad travels to cross-city rival Canisius for a non-league match-up. Game time is slated for 12:00 pm at the Demske Sports Complex.
