Bulls Split Against Regional Rivals

The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team finished its opening weekend with an even record, falling to Niagara on Friday while beating St. Bonaventure on Sunday. Niagara used two second-half goals to its advantage, topping the Bulls 3-1 in Lewiston. Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer) scored the lone goal for the Bulls while Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/ Clarence) picked up the assist. Sunday’s game against the Bonnies favored differently, as UB junior Griffiths chalked a duo of first-half goals to lead UB to the 2-0 win.

New Kid On The Block

Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/ Victor) has transitioned comfortably into the role of starting goalkeeper for the Bulls, picking up a total of five saves over two games in Buffalo’s opening weekned, including her first career shutout on Sunday. Coron is a new face in goal for UB, as former Buffalo goalie Anna-Lesa Calvert held down the position for 34 consecutive games, dating back to the 2004 season. Also, in the win UB Coach Jean-A. Tassy utilized his youthful roster, inserting a total of six freshman, five sophomores, six juniors and both seniors.

Back On Track

After seeing limited action in 2005, Heidi Griffiths’ two goals against St. Bonaventure marked the junior’s first points since the 2004 season. As a freshman, Griffiths tallied just one goal and one assist. Meanwhile, teammate Andrea Vescio’s goal against Niagara on Friday was the sophomore’s third goal of her career, following a freshman campaign in which Vescio collected two goals on the season.

A Taste Of The Tropics

Despite sporting a roster predominantly based out of New York, this year’s roster includes a caribbean feel, as freshman foward/midfielder Cheyra Bell (Warwick, Bermuda/ Bermuda Institute) has joined the Bulls and stands as the only athlete recruited from Bermuda during the Jean-A. Tassy era.

UB Next

The Bulls kick-off a four-game road trip when they head to Vermont on Friday, Sept. 1. The trip continues at Brown on Sunday, Sept. 3. UB will then head to the West Coast to participate in the UC Irvine Nike Invitational, taking on UC-Riverside and UC-Irvine.
