BUFFALO, NY-- Junior Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/ Clarence) scored two early first-half goals and freshman Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/ Victor) recorded her first career shutout in goal, as the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team recorded its first win of the season at UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon, blanking St. Bonaventure, 2-0.

The Bulls jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 2:52 into the game, as Griffiths fought through a crowded goal box to tap in her first goal of the contest thanks to a long throw-in by Courtney MacVie (Tonawanda, NY/ Kenmore East). The goal was Griffiths first of the season while the assist served as MacVie’s first point of the year.

After dominating much of the offensive side of the game in the ensuing minutes, Griffiths struck again in the 13th minute, this time blazing down the right side of the field on a solo breakaway set up by a long feed from freshman Caitlin Higgins (Lancaster, PA/ Penn Manor). Playing in just the second collegiate game of her career, Higgins tallied her first assist of the season, while the goal served as Griffiths’ second goal of 2006.

Despite taking 16 shots in the game, the two early goals were all that the Bulls would need to secure the victory, as neither team found the back of the net in the second half of play. Buffalo’s defense proved to be strong, holding St. Bonaventure to just four shots on the afternoon.

In the shut-out, Coron chalked two saves for the Bulls, while St. Bonaventure keeper Lisa Eberhart tallied seven saves of her own.

With the win, the Bulls evened their record at 1-1-0 on the season in non-conference play, while St. Bonaventure dropped to 0-2-0.

Buffalo’s next contest will be held on Friday, Sept. 1 in Burlington, VT, with the Bulls set to take-on Vermont in a non-conference match-up. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
