Bulls Post Shutout In Victory

UB Holds of Duquesne for 1-0 Win

BUFFALO, NY — The University at Buffalo women's soccer team had another dominating win, despite the low score. The Bulls defeated Duquesne 1-0 to wrap up the Buffalo Invitational. Earlier in the day, Stony Brook defeated Canisius 6-0.

UB was on the attack early and it paid off in the first nine minutes. Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero Syracuse North) took the ball and drove into the box where she was taken down by a Duquesne defender, resulting in a penalty kick. Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) took the kick and shot it past the goalkeeper on the right for a 1-0 Buffalo lead. That lead would hold the rest of the game, despite numerous attempts by UB at a second goal. The Bulls outshot Duquesne 23-2 on the game, and had many near misses in the second half. Listrani took a pass from Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) in front of the goal, but her shot wet just wide and another UB shot later in the half hit off the left cross bar. The Bulls defense held tough and prevented the Dukes from getting any clear looks at the goal. Jaime Adams (Rochester, NY/Greece-Arcadia) recorded her first shutout of the season in the win, recording one save in the process. Duquesne goalie Michelle Guna recorded nine saves in the game.

In the first game of the day, Stony Brook defeated Canisius 6-0. The Seawolves got two first half goals for a 2-0 lead at halftime. Kerri McCabe scored her third goal in two games at the 7:56 mark and Beth Arikian scored at the 15:18 mark. In the second half, it was the Lori Kotzen show for Stony Brook as she recorded a hat trick with three-straight goals to push the lead to 5-0. Jennifer Fontanetta added the last goal at the 76:10 mark for the 6-0 final score.
