Lehigh Scores in Each Half to Down Buffalo in Opener
WEST POINT, NY - Gina Lewandowski scored 25 minutes into the game and added an assist to lift Lehigh University to a 2-0 decision against the University at Buffalo women's soccer team during the opening game of the United States Military Academy's BAE Systems Fall Classic at Clinton Field on Friday evening. The Bulls (0-1 overall) took 17 shots, including 12 in the second half, but could force Mountain Hawks' goaltender Julie Kafka to make only three saves. Lehigh (1-0 overall) took 22 shots, forcing Buffalo goaltender senior Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams) to make four saves. Lewandowski was fed on her game-winning goal from Christin Johnson, as she was able to put a shot in from close range. Nine minutes into the second half, Lewandowski fed Melissa Montalvo, as Montalvo managed to hit a shot from 20 yards out to seal the Mountain Hawks win. Buffalo started four freshmen from a recruiting class that was ranked 16th in the Northeast by SoccerBuzz.com, as Janessa Banwell (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park), Nikki Wilson (El Paso, TX/Franklin), Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) and Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer) each cracked the starting 11 in their first career game. The Bulls will look to get their first win of the year as they take on Army in the closing game
of the BAE Systems Fall Classic on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Army was ranked 12th in
SoccerBuzz.com's Northeast region preseason poll. |
