UB Dominates in 7-1 Win Over Canisius

Stony Brook Beats Duquesne in First Game

BUFFALO, NY — It was over almost as soon as it began as the UB women's soccer team scored in the first three minutes of the game over Canisius and cruised to a 7-1 win in the first day of action at the UB Invitational. In the first game of the tournament, Stony Brook defeated Duquesne 3-1.

The Bulls got on the board early as Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) score at the 3:46 mark for the 1-0 lead. Last years team scoring leader, Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), followed up with her first goal of the new season at the 11:08 mark for a 2-0 lead. Then it was time for the UB freshman to get in the scoring act. Emily Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) scored her first career goal at 25:30 on an assist from Listrani, and less than two minutes later, freshman Robin Aparo (Victor, NY/Victor Central) scored for a 4-0 UB lead. The Bulls would add one more goal in the first half as Devon Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names), twin sister of Emily, would score her first career goal at the 40:47 mark and UB went into halftime with a 5-0 lead.

In the second half, the Bulls again wasted no time, as Linnaea DiNallo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored three minutes into the half to make it 6-0. Emily Russell then converted her second goal of the game off an assist from fellow freshman Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), her second assist of the game. Canisius would spoil the UB hopes for a shutout on a goal from Jen Gwizdowski at the 74:48 mark for the 7-1final score.

The Bulls outshot Canisius 40-3 in the game and had 10 corner kicks to the Golden Griffins one as UB controlled the game throughout. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) recorded two saves in the game while giving up one goal and Canisius goalie Christine Moran recorded nine saves in 66 minutes of play.

In the first game, Stony Brook jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kerri McCabe at the 30:23 mark. A few minutes later, Julie Antignano broke free for Duquesne and put the Dukes on the board with a goal at the 39:13 mark as the game went to halftime tied 1-1. Stony Brook opened it up in the second half as McCabe scored her second goal of the game at the 55:03 mark. Lisa Mariano then sealed the win with a goal at the 71:54 mark for the 3-1 win. Stony Brook outshot the Dukes 22-6 on the game.

Action in the tournament will resume on Sunday as Stony Brook will face Canisius at 11 am and Buffalo will take on Duquesne at 2 pm.
