BUFFALO, NY - Two University at Buffalo women’s soccer players are spending their summer away from UB, playing in the United Soccer League’s W-League. Senior defender Courtney MacVie (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) is playing for the Rochester Raging Rhinos while junior forward Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) is a member of the Toronto Lady Lynx.

MacVie served as a co-captain for the Bulls in 2006 and appeared in all 18 matches, making 16 starts along the Buffalo back line and registering two assists. She has appeared in all five matches for the Rhinos, making two starts.

McCalla was named the Bulls’ Most Outstanding Player following the 2006 season after registering three goals and a team-leading six assists. She earned Mid-American Conference Player of the Week honors for the week of October 9 and was also named to the All-MAC Second Team. McCalla has appeared in all six matches thus far for the Lynx, making three starts and registering one assist.

The United Soccer League’s W-League is a 35-team league that provides a high-level of competition for top international players throughout the summer months. The league boasts many players who have played in the Women’s World Cup, including Tiffany Milbrett, who has made over 100 international appearances for the United States. In addition, elite college players are able to participate in the league without forfeiting their collegiate eligibility.

MacVie, McCalla and the rest of the Bulls open the 2007 season on Friday, August 31 when they host local rival Niagara at 7 p.m. at UB Stadium.
