Women's Soccer Announces 2003 Award Winners

Roesch, Calvert, McJury And Russell earn honors

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team handed out its season-ending awards at the annual UB Athletic Awards Banquet on April 27 at the Four Points Sheraton in Cheektowaga.

Receiving awards from head coach Jean-A. Tassy and his staff were freshman Jessica Roesch Centennial, CO/Grandview), sophomore Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams), junior Brenna McJury (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and senior Emily Russell (Averill Park, NY/Academy of the Holy Names).

Roesch was named the team's Top Newcomer following her freshman campaign. A hard-working player, she appeared in 14 games and started one. She registered 11 shots on the season.

Calvert was named the team's Most Improved Player. After starting 14 games as a freshman, Calvert started 18 games this season. She tallied nine victories, made 64 saves and had a 1.31 goals against average. The sophomore netminder had three shutouts on the season, including blankings of Kent State and Ohio.

For the second straight season, McJury earned the Coach's Award. She appeared in all 20 games and started 19. The junior defender helped solidify a Bulls' defense that posted five shutouts in 2003. In addition, she tallied an assist in UB's 3-0 win over Niagara. McJury was named first-team All-Conference.

Emily Russell

Russell earned Most Valuable Player honors after having a career year for the Bulls. The senior forward had a team-best 15 goals and 34 points on the season. Her 15-goal total was the second-highest single-season mark in school history. Russell was named first-team All-Conference and earned All-Northeast Region honors.

Women's soccer finished the season 11-8-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the MAC.
