Women's Soccer Announces 2004 Award WinnersBUFFALO, NY The University at Buffalo women's soccer team handed out its season-ending awards at the annual UB Athletic Awards Banquet on May 3 at the Millennium Hotel in Cheektowaga. Receiving awards from head coach Jean-A. Tassy and his staff were freshman Courtney MacVie (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore Ease) and seniors sophomore Arielle Korczykowski (Derby, NY/Lake Shore), Brenna McJury (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and Jenny Dannecker (East Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy).
MacVie was named the team's Top Newcomer after earning a slot on the Mid-American Conference's All-Freshmen team. After a season-ending injury to McJury, MacVie moved back to the sweeper position that McJury had occupied. In that role, MacVie helped the team to a 4-4-1 record in the final nine games, including a 2-0 shutout of co-league champion Ohio. Starting all 19 games, MacVie played an integral part of a Bulls' defense that had four shutouts on the season. MacVie also helped spark the offense, offering three assists on the year, including one on the go-ahead-goal in Buffalo's 2-1 win over Marshall on Oct. 22 and one on the game-winning goal in Buffalo's season-concluding 2-1 win against Cornell on Oct. 26.
Korczykowski was named the team's Most Improved Player. After missing seven games due to injury, Korczykowski returned to the Bulls' lineup for the final three games of the year and added five points. On Oct. 22, she put the Bulls ahead for good when she scored in the 27th minute against Marshall. On Oct. 24, she added an assist on an insurance goal as UB shocked league co-champion Ohio, 2-0. On Oct. 26, Korczykowski scored the gamewinner in the 52nd minute as the Bulls beat Cornell, 2-1. She also added a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win against Canisius. Korczykowski was one of three Bulls to cross the 10-point barrier on the season.
McJury was given the team's Coach's Award for the third straight year to go along with a MAC Second-Team All-Conference selection. McJury was the rock of the Bulls' defense before going down with a season-ending injury at Ball State. During her 10 games, she helped the team to three shutouts and led the defense to overtime in two other matches. Also an important spark in the Bulls' offense, McJury had two assists this season. She finishes her career with 12 career points on three goals and six assists, as she played forward and midfield before moving back to the defensive line to help the team as a freshman. During her career, McJury made three appearances in the Mid-American Conference tournament and was a first-team All-MAC selection in 2003. McJury is also a UB Scholar Athlete as a chemistry major.
Dannecker was named the team's Most Outstanding Player after leading the team in scoring with 19 points. Dannecker posted a seven-point game, scoring three times and adding an assist in a 5-2 win against Toledo. The forward finished ninth in the MAC with six goals and third with seven assists. She also moved into the top 20 at UB in goals (12, 16th), assists (12, 12th) and points (36, 17th). Buffalo finished the season 7-11-1 under 10th-year head coach Jean-A Tassy. |
