Women's Soccer Announces 2002 Award Winners
BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team handed out its season-ending awards at the annual UB Athletic Awards Banquet on April 29 at Samuel's Grande Manor in Clarence. Receiving awards from head coach Jean-A. Tassy and his staff were freshman Natalia Crofut (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois), senior Meaghan Maul (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East), sophomore Brenna McJury (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and senior Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse). Crofut was named the team's Top Newcomer after an impressive freshman campaign. She led the Bulls in goals and points with five and two, respectively. She also tied for second on the team with two assists. On October 25, she scored the game-winning goal in the Bulls' 3-0 win over Kent State. Maul was named the team's Most Improved Player. After not registering a point in her first three seasons, the senior midfielder tallied two goals and an assist in 2002. Her second goal came in the Bulls' 3-0 win over Canisius on October 8.
McJury was named the Coach's Award winner for her hard work on the defensive line. Last year's Newcomer of the Year started 17 of the 19 games in which she appeared this season. The sophomore defender helped solidify a Bulls' defense that posted four shutouts in 2002. Pfeffer earned Most Valuable Player honors after registering four goals and two assists in 2002. The senior midfielder scored the game-winning goals in the Bulls' 1-0 win over Northern Illinois on September 13 and on a penalty kick in UB's 3-2 win over Binghamton on October 31. Women's soccer finished the season 7-8-5 overall and 5-5-2 in the MAC. |
