Women's Soccer Announces 2005 Award WinnersBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team handed out its season-ending awards at the annual UB Athletic Awards Banquet on May 2 at the Millennium Hotel in Cheektowaga. Receiving awards from head coach Jean-A. Tassy and his staff were freshman Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton), sophomore Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) and seniors Natalia Crofut (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois) and Arielle Korczykowski (Derby, NY/Lake Shore).
The team’s Top Newcomer Award went to McCalla, also earned a slot on the MAC All-Freshman squad. The forward, who scored twice and added an assist for a total of five points, was one of the Bulls' top offensive threats in the clutch. She scored goals in two Buffalo wins, as she scored the second goal in Buffalo's 3-2 win against regionally-ranked Army on Aug. 28 and offered a game-tying goal on Buffalo's lone penalty kick of the season in its come-from-behind 3-2 overtime win against Northern Illinois on Oct. 9. The play-making forward was one of Buffalo's top offensive threats in the open, but injuries shelved her for the final five games. In all, McCalla still appeared in 13 games and started 11 and tied for third on the team with 21 shots.
Turner earned the team’s Most Improved Player Award as the sophomore started 15 games during her sophomore campaign after seeing action in just six games as a freshman. She scored twice on the team, both in wins for the Bulls, as she scored her first career goal in the fifth minute of a 1-0 win against Ball State then followed that by the first goal in a 3-2 overtime win against Northern Illinois. Turner, who emerged as a valuable forward for the Bulls, took 17 shots and finished third on the team with five points.
Crofut earned the Coaches’ Award after earning slots on the NSCAA Scholar All-East Region Third Team and the Academic All-MAC team. She led Buffalo with three goals and eight points despite being injured for the final six games of the season. She is one of only 27 players to reach 50 career points in MAC history and one of 11 players in UB history to reach 20 career goals, reaching both before being injured this season. She finished her career ninth in goals (21) and ninth in points (53) in UB history. She led the team in goals three times and points once and was the first player since all-time leading scorer Paula Listrani (1997-1999) to have at least 10 points in her first three seasons.
Korczykowski earned the team’s Most Outstanding Player Award. A defensive midfielder, Korczykowski played in 18 games and started 16 for the Bulls. A tri-captain, she took 10 shots this season. The team’s Most Improved Player in 2004, Korczykowski missed seven games due to injury, but returned to the Bulls' lineup for the final three games of the year and added five points. Buffalo finished the season 5-11-2 under 11th-year head coach Jean-A Tassy. |
