Women’s Soccer Award Winners AnnouncedBUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team handed out its season-ending awards at the annual UB Athletic Awards Banquet on May 1 at the Millennium Hotel in Cheektowaga. Receiving awards from head coach Jean-A. Tassy and his staff were sophomore Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton), freshman Caitlin Higgins (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor), sophomore Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer) and junior Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean).
McCalla earned the team’s Most Outstanding Player Award after having a stellar sophomore season. In 2006, McCalla keyed the Buffalo midfield while leading the team in assists, tallying six on the season. Additionally, McCalla earned Mid-American Conference Player of the Week honors for the week of October 9, in which she nailed a duo of goals and two assists to lead the Bulls to back-to-back victories over Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. The Sophomore was also named to the MAC’s Second Team.
The team’s Top Newcomer Award went to Higgins. The midfielder, who scored four times and added three assists for a total of 11 points, was one of the Bulls’ top offensive threats in the clutch. Additionally, Higgins was responsible for two game-winners in 2006, including winning goal in UB’s 3-2 win over Canisius on 9/15. At the conclusion of the season, Higgins was also recognized by two major organizations within the soccer world, as she was named to the 2006 NSCAA/Adidas High School Girls Scholar All-America team and the 2006 PSCA/Brine All-State Pennsylvania team.
Vescio earned the Coaches’ Award after playing in all 18 games this season while scoring a team-leading six goals. Vescio was an integral part of the Bulls’ offense, adding an assist and finishing the season with 13 points on the season, second on the team. Additionally, a Management major carrying a 3.936 GPA, Vescio was named to the Academic All-MAC Team. Vescio was also recently honored as one of five inductees into the A.N. Myer Secondary School Athletes’ Wall of Distinction.
Turner earned the team’s Most Improved Player Award as the junior was bestowed the honor for the second year in a row. Turner finished the 2006 season with four goals and three assists, earning her 11 points on the season. In addition, Turner was recently added to the UB softball team’s roster and has appeared in five games, getting two starts in the outfield while scoring one run. A UB Scholar Athlete, Turner serves as the 2006-07 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Vice-President and will represent the University at Buffalo at the 2007 NCAA Leadership Conference from May 27-31 in Orlando, FL. |
