Women's Soccer Announces Additions For 2001 Season

Head Coach Jean A. Tassy's Squad Will Welcome 14 Newcomers

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team has announced 14 newcomers to its roster for the 2001 season. All 14 student-athletes will attend UB next season and begin competing with the Bulls in the fall.

Carolyn Kanhai (Scarborough, Ontario/Satec Collegiate High School) is a 5'9" midfielder/defender who has experience playing on the Canadian Provincial team.

"Carolyn is a very competitive player, and she's equally comfortable up front and in the back," said UB head coach Jean A. Tassy. "What impresses me most is her creativity with the ball, her great field awareness and the way she utilizes her speed to go at players. She is physical and strong in the air, and we look forward to her contributions to our program."

Of Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams), a 5'7" goalkeeper, Tassy commented, "What impresses me most is her great field awareness, her agility and the pride she takes in owning her box. Her added attributes are her alertness to start a quick counter, her skill at distributing the ball and communication. She will be a tremendous addition to our program."

Vanessa Walsh (Lakeview, NY/Frontier) is a 5'7" All-Western New York defender and midfielder. Tassy expects her to contribute in the midfield or as a marking back.

"Vanessa has great vision, speed with the ball, knowledge of her position, physical presence and strength in the air," said Tassy. "She hungers to continuously improve. She will be a tremendous addition in solidifying our defense."

Of Erin Tambs (Farnham, NY/Lake Shore), a 5'8" All-ECIC defender and midfielder, Tassy said, "What impresses me about Erin is her speed, her physical presence, her flexibility to play many positions well and her tenacity. She has a rare combination of speed, strength and intelligence and has the ability to mark opponents' top players. She will also be a tremendous addition in solidifying our defense and increasing our team speed in the back."

Jenny Dannecker (East Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy) is another All-Western New York player. She is a 5'6" forward/midfielder who led Western New York in career goals scored.

"What impresses me most about Jenny is her speed, which will pose immediate problems for defenders," said Tassy. "She definitely has a knack for finishing plays and plans to continue her pace at the Division I level. Her competitive team spirit will add to our team speed on the attack."

Of Lindsay Szafranski (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East), a 5'4" All-Western New York midfielder, Tassy said, "Lindsay has great technical skills and vision. Her quickness with the ball and her powerful shot with either foot will increase our finishing power. She will be a tremendous addition to our program."

A 5'10" defender/midfielder, Lauren Mort (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) was an All-Greater Rochester selection who should contribute in the back and in the midfield.

"Lauren comes to us with a strong history of success at both the high school and club levels," said Tassy. "She will give us flexibility in the inside position on defense and in the midfield with her great field awareness, her technical skills, her strength in the air and her physical presence."

Of 5'7" goalkeeper Jessica Dunn (Webster, NY/Webster), Tassy commented, "What impresses me most is Jessica's passion for the game, her leadership to direct the defense, her strength in the air, her competitive nature and her hunger to continuously improve. She prides herself in owning her box and will be a tremendous addition to our team."

Arielle Korzczykowski (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) is the fourth All-Western New York selection among the list of newcomers. A 5'7" forward/midfielder, she was a teammate of fellow newcomer Erin Tambs at Lake Shore Central.

"What impresses me about Arielle is her tenacity, her vision, her ability to mark an opponent's top player and her passion to consistently improve," said Tassy. "Another tremendous addition to our program, she will give us some flexibility in the midfield and on top."

Tassy is also looking for the following recruits to contribute and play an integral part on the 2001 squad: Andrea Baker (Andover, NY/Andover Central), a 5'8" midfielder, Susan Dzierzewski (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy), a 5'4" defender, Hilary Higley (Clarence, NY/Clarence), a 5'6" defender, Annie Malayny (Buffalo, NY/Villa Maria Academy), a 5'5" attacker, and Jennifer Rounds (Vestal, NY/Vestal), another 5'5" attacker.
