Bulls Hold Off Ohio in East Division Action

Mari McClure leads Buffalo with 21 points in Mid-American Conference action

BUFFALO, NY - Four players scored in double figures-led by sophomore guard Mari McClure's (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) 21 points as the University at Buffalo women's basketball team slipped past the Ohio Bobcats Saturday, 73-71 to move to 15-7 overall, 8-4 in the Mid-American Conference.

The Bulls outscored the Bobcats 34-25 in the first half and found themselves leading by as much as 11 points in the second half in East Division action in The Convocation Center Saturday afetrnoon (2/6). But the Bobcats battled back and narrowed the Buffalo lead to six points, 71-65 with :41 seconds remaining in regulation. Then out of an Ohio timeout freshman Cathy Szall stepped up and nailed a three pointer with :21 seconds remaining to cut the Buffalo lead to three points, 71-68. Amazingly in the Bobcat's next possession Szall again pulled off another three-pointer to tie the score at 71. The Bobcats where forced to foul in the next possession sending Buffalo's McClure to the charity stripe for two shots-she nailed both for a 73-71 Buffalo victory.

McClure went 6-of-11 from the field and 8-of-12 from the free-throw line to lead all UB scores with 21. Sophomore center Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) had 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field while senior guard Megan McCray (Corry, PA/Corry) contributed 14 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Senior point guard Catherine Jacob (Pittsburgh, PA/Pittsburgh) also managed 10 points and dished out five assists.

Senior Kim Coon (Belding, MI/Belding) who is averaging 12.4 points per game this season became the tenth player to score 1,000 points in UB women's basketball history when she scored two points in Saturday's game.

The Bulls return to action on Wednesday night for a West Divisional matchup with Western Michigan at 7:30 pm in Alumni Arena.
