Bulls Speed Past RoadrunnersSAN ANTONIO, TX - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team tied its season-high for points in a half (47), en route to a, 73-62, come-from-behind victory against the UTSA Roadrunners Friday night in the first round of the UTSA Wells Fargo Classic. The Bulls relied on a strong performance from the charity stripe as UB went to the line 33 times, including 29 of those in the second half. With the victory Buffalo improves to 5-5 on the season. For a second straight game the Bulls got a huge performance from sophomore Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) who scored a game-high 23 points, including an 11-of-16 performance from the line. Turner scored 19 of her points after the intermission, including all of her free throws.
Freshman Jamie Schiebner (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) recorded her second double-double of the season, with a career-high 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Schiebner was the leading scorer for the Bulls in the first half, as they went to the lockerroom down, 33-26. This was the first time this season the Bulls won a game when trailing at the half. The Bulls can credit their comeback to an 11-0 run to start the second half, which began on a jumper by Belinda Gibb (Denmark, Western Austrailia/Willetton), who had her best offensive game of the season, chipping in 11 points for UB. The Bulls would finish the game on an 18-8 run over the final six minutes of the contest.
"I think we can credit our second half success to the fact that we tired our opponents out tonight, said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. "We felt that at the end of the first half their legs were starting to go and we just ran it right at them. We made them make hard transitions and play defense for longer periods of time and they stopped hitting the shots that they had been hitting in the first half." Senior Brooke Meunier (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) capped off four players in double digits with 11 points and eight boards, while playing all 40 minutes. UTSA (5-5) was led by two players in double figures. Terrie Davis led the Roadrunners with 13 points, while Nicole Dunson chipped in 12 points. The Roadrunners shot just 28.9 percent from the field in the second half and the Bulls shot 29 more free throws than their opponent. The Bulls return to action tomorrow as they face Tulsa in the second day of the UTSA Wells Fargo Classic. The Golden Hurricanes defeated Colorado State earlier tonight, 69-65. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
