Women's Basketball Ends Non-Conference Schedule With Win Over Navy, 69-42

Bulls enter MAC play with a 9-2 record

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team improved to 9-2 on the season with a 27-point victory over visiting Navy at Alumni Arena, 69-42. Senior Sonia Ortega (Chihuahua, Mexico/Cobach) led the Bulls with 12 points and nine rebounds, and freshman point guard Virginia Jennings (Nashville, MI/Hastings) scored a career-high 11 points in the win. Senior Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) added 10 points to help the Bulls snap a two-game losing skid and remain undefeated at home this season (6-0). The loss drops Navy's record to 3-8 overall.

After a lay-up by Navy freshman Adrienne Roseti brought the Mids within two, 9-7, with 15:33 showing on the clock, the Bulls embarked on a 22-9 run to close the first half with a 15-point lead, 31-16. The Bulls then held Navy scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half en route to their ninth win of the season. Buffalo shot 51 percent from the floor while Navy shot just 29 percent for the game. The Bulls also slightly outrebounded the Mids by a 35-32 margin.

"I'm excited that we ended the non-conference schedule with a win, especially coming off of two losses," said UB head coach Cheryl Dozier. "There are a couple of things we still need to get better at, but hopefully the win will give us some confidence entering the MAC schedule. The 9-2 non-conference record is nice, but the rest of the games from here on out are what really matter."

Buffalo sophomore Rachel Martin (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) contributed nine points, six rebounds and two assists off the bench, and senior Mari McClure (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) added eight points, two rebounds and two assists. Navy's Roseti, a native of nearby Williamsville, NY, scored a game and career-high 18 points and grabbed 11 boards for her fourth double-double of the season.

The Bulls (9-2) begin the Mid-American Conference portion of their 2000-01 schedule on Wednesday, January 3 at Miami, OH at 7 pm. Buffalo then hosts Akron on Saturday, January 6 at 2 pm and Kent State on Wednesday, January 10 at 7 pm at Alumni Arena. Both home games will be televised by Adelphia HTTV on a tape-delayed basis.
