Women's Basketball Falls to Boston College

Loss is only Buffalo's second this season

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team scored a season-low 17 points in the first half and suffered its second straight loss of the season with a 59-41 defeat at Boston College. Senior Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) led the Bulls with 12 points, extending her streak of consecutive games scoring in double figures to 23 games. With the loss, Buffalo now stands at 8-2 on the year, while Boston College improved to 6-4 overall.

The Bulls never led during the game, but they trailed by just six points at halftime, 23-17, after closing out the first half with a 6-0 run. Boston College, however, used a 14-2 run midway through the second half to take control of the game and put it out of reach. Buffalo junior Jana Richtrova (Benesov U Prahy, Czech Republic/Genesee Community College) sparked the Bulls off the bench in the second half with eight points, including two three-pointers, in 10 minutes of play, but it proved to be too little too late. The Bulls committed 17 turnovers which BC converted into 21 points, and the Eagles outrebounded Buffalo by a 40-31 margin. UB shot just 28 percent (15-for-53) from the floor compared the Boston College's 45 percent (23-for-51).

"Poor shooting definitely hurt us tonight," said UB head coach Cheryl Dozier. "We have to figure out how to score on the road, and we have to work on our post defense. Becky Gottstein killed us in the post. We basically got beat by one person...Now it's back to the drawing board because we have another game on Saturday."

The Eagles' Gottstein, recovering from a broken hand, returned to the lineup after sitting out four games and led BC with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds. UB senior Sonia Ortega (Chihuahua, Mexico/Cobach) finished the night with nine points, four rebounds, three assists, four steals and one block, and senior Mari McClure (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) added six points and four boards.

The Bulls (8-2) close out their non-conference schedule on Saturday, December 30 against Navy at Alumni Arena at 2 pm.
