BUFFALO, NY – The visiting Southeast Missouri St. Redhawks led wire-to-wire, defeating the University at Buffalo women’s basketball team, 61-50, Friday night at Alumni Arena. The Bulls were able to keep the nation’s leading rebounder, Lachelle Lyles, in check, but were unable to come away with the victory. UB fell to 4-7 on the season while the Redhawks improve to 7-4.

After falling early in the contest, 10-4, the Bulls were able to go on a quick 6-0 run, capped off by a Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) layup, which tied the score at 10. Southeast Missouri St. responded with a basket, but UB tied the game again on a pair of free throws by Kourtney Brown (Solon, OH/Solon). However it was the last time the game would be tied as the Redhawks then went on an 8-2 run to take a six-point lead. The Bulls cut the lead to three points before SEMO rattled off five points to end the half.

The Bulls came out fighting in the second half, pulling to as close as two with 15:25 remaining in the second half. The Redhawks again responded, embarking on an 11-3 run. UB was not done fighting as two Jamie Schiebner (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) free throws capped off an 8-2 run and pulled UB within four. The Bulls would get no closer as the Redhawks finished the contest on a 10-3 run.

“I thought we shot the ball horrible from the perimeter tonight and that was huge,” said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. “We rushed a lot of shots and didn’t take advantage of some penetration opportunities. Heather [Turner] did a nice job banging down low, but we need our perimeter players to step up when they are jamming down on your posts. The basket needs to look like an ocean for them, but I think tonight it looked like a pinhole.”

Turner led the way for Buffalo, recording 19 points on the night, which were tops among all players. Junior Stephanie Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) added 10 points and five rebounds, while recording four assists. Sophomore Rachelle Matthys (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) recorded a career-high six rebounds, including five on the defensive end. Also helping out on the boards was Brown, who recorded seven on the night.

Brown and Turner were able to keep Lyles, who averaged over 16 rebounds a game entering the contest, to 11, but only two of those came off the offensive glass.

The Redhawks were led by 15 points from Tarina Nixon, who went 5-of-8 from behind the arc in the first half. Missy Whitney and Ashley Lovelady each had 10 points.

After playing the last four games at home, the Bulls will hit the road to finish out non-conference play on Friday, Dec. 29 at Bucknell. The Bulls and the Bison will tip off at 7:00 pm.
