Women's Basketball Falls to Seton Hall

First loss of season ends school-record 8-0 start

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2000-01 season, ending a school-record 8-0 undefeated start to the year. The Bulls dropped a 73-64 decision at Seton Hall, despite a 17-point performance from senior Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield).

The Bulls outplayed the Pirates in the final 20 minutes of the game, outscoring them by a 39-27 margin, but they ran out of time in an attempt to overcome a 21-point halftime deficit. The Bulls trailed by as many as 24 points in the first half as Seton Hall shot a stinging 64% from the floor (21-for-33). A three-pointer by senior Tara Perrier (Aurora, Ontario/Aurora) sent Buffalo to the lockerroom trailing by 21 points, 46-25. The Bulls battled for the entire second half, led by sophomore Katie Blazewski (Plymouth, MI/Detroit Country Day) and senior Mari McClure (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams). Blazewski scored all 12 of her points after halftime, and she scored eight of the Bulls' first 11 points of the second half, reducing Seton Hall's lead to 14 points, 50-36, with 15:13 remaining on the clock. McClure scored eight of her 10 points in the second half, but the Bulls were not able to get any closer than eight points to the Pirates' lead. Seton Hall outrebounded the Bulls by a 37-24 margin, and the Pirates allowed the Bulls to grab just four rebounds on their offensive end.

Bell added three blocks and four rebounds to go along with her team-high 17 points. Perrier finished with nine points, hitting three three-pointers, and senior Sonia Ortega (Chihuahua, Mexico/Cobach) added seven points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Buffalo (8-1) has one more game remaining in a three-game block of playing against BIG EAST opponents. The Bulls play at Boston College on Thursday, December 28 before closing out their non-conference schedule with a December 30 home date with Navy at Alumni Arena.
