Bulls Fall In Overtime To Oakland

Brooke Meunier ties her career high with 25 points

ROCHESTER, MI - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team was unable to make it three in a row on the road Tuesday night, dropping an 82-80 overtime contest, to the host Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The loss drops the Bulls to 4-4 on the season.

Buffalo came out with early leads of 7-0 and 24-9, but Oakland stayed in the game thanks to 13 three-point field goals. The Bulls also found success from behind the arc, hitting 11. Oakland opened up the overtime period with five straight points to earn its fourth victory on the season.

Senior Brooke Meunier (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) led all scorers with 25 points, tying a career high, which was set in the Bulls last overtime game, a loss to Niagara. Meunier added five assists on the night before fouling out in overtime.

Reigning MAC Player of the Week Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) continued her strong play, recording a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, seven of those were off the offensive glass.

Freshman Rachelle Matthys (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) dropped a career-high 19 points on seven field goals, including four from behind the arc. As a team UB shot 50 percent from three-point range.

"Tonight was a hard fought game by both teams," head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald said. "Unfortunately we didn't get the outcome we hoped for. I think we did some things well out there, but there is definitely room for improvement as we head closer to conference play."

The Bulls were also impressive from the charity strip in the contest. Buffalo hit 11 foul shots in a row before missing one in the overtime period. For the game the Bulls shot nearly 92 percent from the line.

Buffalo, who leads the MAC in rebounding margin, outrebounded Oakland by a margin of 41-32. In addition to Turner's 15 boards, freshman Jamie Schiebner (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) recorded 11 rebounds.

Oakland was led by four players in double digits, including a 24-point performance from Anne Hafeli. Jayme Wilson and Nicole Piggott chipped in 17 and 15, respectively and Bonnie Baker added 10.

The Bulls won't be back in action until Wednesday, December 28 when they host Bucknell in their final home contest of 2005. Tip off is set for 5 p.m.
