Bulls Ousted By Oakland

Brooke Meunier scores team-high 17 points in 93-54 loss

ROCHESTER, MI - Junior Brooke Meunier (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) scored a team-high 17 points and freshman Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) added 16 points, but the Oakland Golden Grizzlies shot 53.6 percent from the floor, including 50.0 percent from three-point range (7-for-14), to earn a convincing 93-54 win over the University at Buffalo women's basketball team tonight in front of 545 fans in 'O' Rena. With the loss, the Bulls dropped to 1-9 on the season while Oakland improved to 7-3 overall.

The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a 9-0 lead less than two minutes into the game and then extended their lead to 14-2 at the 17:19 mark and to 21-7 at the 15:53 mark. Turner scored the Bulls' first seven points in the game before freshman Stephanie Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) knocked down a three-pointer with 15:37 on the clock that started a 7-0 UB run. Bennett and Meunier had two free throws apiece to complete the run that got Buffalo within seven, 21-14, with 13:51 to play in the half. However, the Bulls' offense then went cold, missing its next seven shots while Oakland put together a 9-0 run to go up by 16, 30-14, with 10:18 to play. The Golden Grizzlies later put together an 8-0 run and then extended it to 16-4 to take a 24-point lead, 48-24, with 2:12 remaining in the half. A three-pointer at the buzzer by Jenna Schroeder sent Oakland to the lockerroom with a 55-26 halftime lead.

Oakland did not let up in the second half, starting with an 8-0 run, including two three-pointers, to go up by 37, 63-26, with 17:47 remaining in the game. The Golden Grizzlies led by as many as 41 points down the stretch before the 93-54 final.

"This has been a tough stretch with four games in 11 days, and we have a much-needed break ahead of us," said Buffalo head coach Cheryl Dozier. "We have one more non-conference game to figure things out before we start Mid-American Conference play, and we need to start over from here, regroup and continue to work hard."

Oakland shot 37-for-69 from the floor, including 24-for-40 in the first half (60.0 percent) while the Bulls were just 19-for-58 (32.8 percent) in the game. Buffalo outrebounded the Grizzlies by a 38-37 margin, but the Bulls committed 26 turnovers to Oakland's 10.

The Golden Grizzlies had three players finish in double figures in scoring, led by 23 points from Anne Hafeli. Nicole Piggott finished with 17 points, 14 coming in the first half, and Jayme Wilson had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Bennett finished with seven points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Bulls, while Meunier, and Allison Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) also grabbed seven rebounds apiece.

The Bulls are now off until after the New Year. They begin a four-game homestand on Sunday, January 2, hosting East Carolina at 2 pm.
