Hot-Shooting Bulls Defeat Northeastern, 87-59BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team shot 69 percent from the field and UB won its fourth straight game, this time an 87-59 victory over Northeastern on Sunday at Alumni Arena. The 87 points are the most the Bulls have scored since an 87-81 victory over Howard on December 8, 2002 at the Duke Classic. It is the most points UB has scored at Alumni Arena since it defeated nationally-ranked North Carolina, 95-89, to open the 2000-01 season.
The Bulls (4-3) relied on a balanced scoring effort as five Bulls scored in double-figures, led by 18 points from sophomore Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy). Turner's game-high offensive output came on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the field and a 4-of-6 performance from the charity stripe. Turner also recorded a game-high nine rebounds and recorded a new career-high in assists with three. Senior Brooke Meunier (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) added 13 points for the Bulls and pulled down eight rebounds, while recording six assists and turning the ball over just twice. Sophomore Stephanie Bennett (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) hit double figures with a 10 point performance, but notched a new career-high in assists as she dished out nine in the contest. The 22 assists are a season-high for Buffalo. "I was really pleased with today's effort," head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald said. "I was most pleased with the way we shared the basketball. We had 22 assists on 33 field goals and especially in the first half we had good looks to teammates. The team is really starting to understand where their teammates like the ball and they are learning how to get it to them."
The freshmen got into the action as well as Rachelle Matthys (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) and Jamie Schiebner (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) both had career-high 12 point performances. The Bulls never trailed in the contest, using a 19-5 run in a seven-minute span late in the first half. The Bulls added a 12-4 run late in the second half to clinch the victory. UB dominated the statistical categories in the game, shooting 65.5 percent in the first half and then bettering that with a 73.7 percent output in the second half. The Huskies were able to manage just 36.9 percent from the field in the contest. Northeastern (3-4) was led by 12-point performances from Ashley Feldman and Maralene Zwarich and 10 points from Jody Burrows. The Bulls were able to keep Shaleyse Smallwood, the CAA's leading scorer, to eight points on 3-of-10 shooting. Buffalo will look to continue the streak as they travel to Rochester, MI on Tuesday night for a meeting with Oakland. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.
