Bell Gets 18 as Bulls Sink Midshipmen

Buffalo women's basketball moves to 4-1 with non-conference road win at Navy

The University at Buffalo women's basketball team had three players score in double figures and forced the Midshipmen of Navy into 30 turnovers in a 61-46 non-conference road win Monday night (12/6) at Alumni Hall.

Junior center Tiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) had a team-high 18 points and six rebounds in the Bulls victory while junior Mari McClure (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) and freshman forward Kim Kilpela (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) each added 10 points. McClure also dished out a team-high five assists in the victory.

"This was a big road win for us," stated Buffalo head coach Cheryl Dozier. "We struggled on the road last season and now we are 2-0 so far this season in road games. Tiffany had her usual big game tonight and I was especially impressed with our strong bench play in the game. Kim Kilpela really stepped up and played well tonight off the bench and I felt Colleen Tabor came in and gave us some valuable minutes."

The Midshipmen scored the first bucket of the game on a jumper by Lisa Steinmetz at 19:32 but that was the only time in the game Navy would own the lead. The game was tied on three other occasions early in the first half with the last tie of the game coming with 12:59 to go in the first half on another jumper by Lisa Steinmetz. The Bulls held the lead for the rest of the game after a Tiffany Bell made jumper with 12:02 left in the first stanza, which made the score 10-8.

The Bulls used strong defense to force the Midshipmen into 30 turnovers in the game and managed to limit their own to just 10.

"We are continuing to win games with our defense," commented Cheryl Dozier. "We forced them into to 30 turnovers and everytime they made a run, we countered with big plays."

The Bulls (4-1) travel to Albany on Thursday (12/9) for a 7:00pm matchup.
