Bulls Drop NC Central At Lady Pirate Invitational, 65-54
Kourtney Brown is named to the All-Tournament Team
After the Eagles scored the opening basket at the 19:11 mark, the Bulls responded by going on a 17-0 run over the next seven minutes as they took a 17-2 lead in the contest. Redshirt sophomore Kourtney Brown recorded eight points during that run to fuel another big day for her. The Eagles fought back though scoring the next six points to cut the lead to nine. North Carolina Central would could the lead to as little as eight in the first half and that was the margin at halftime with the Bulls leading, 27-19.
The Bulls began the second half on a 19-8 run as the Bulls took their largest lead of the game at 19 with a three from Rachelle Matthys at the 14:18 mark. However, the Eagles again fought back cutting the deficit to nine twice in the final four minutes before the Bulls hung on for the victory.
“We are very fortunate to walk out with a victory tonight,” said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. "I thought we started well, but we need to do a better job taking care of the basketball and finishing out games.”
The Bulls were led by 19 points from Brown, who was named to the Lady Pirate Invitational All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the tournament. Brown had a double-double as she also had a career-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Fortman added 17 points, eight rebounds, a career-high six assists and three blocked shots for UB.
Matthys, who just a game ago recorded eight three pointers, had nine points on the night as she went 3-for-5 from behind the arc, finishing the tournament 11-for-16 from three. Senior Dortae Freeman had five assists, while fellow senior Jamie Schiebner had a season-high seven rebounds and three assists. Freshman Beth Christensen added six rebounds for the Bulls.
NC Central had three players in double figures including 16 points from Jori Nwachukwu and 12 points from Blaire Houston.
The Bulls will return to action next Saturday as they host Hofstra in the first half of a doubleheader with the UB men’s team. Tip off is set for 1:00 pm.
