GREENVILLE, NC – The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team used an early 17-0 run and never looked back as the Bulls defeated North Carolina Central, 65-54, Saturday evening at Minges Coliseum in the consolation finals of the East Carolina Lady Pirate Invitational.

After the Eagles scored the opening basket at the 19:11 mark, the Bulls responded by going on a 17-0 run over the next seven minutes as they took a 17-2 lead in the contest. Redshirt sophomore Kourtney Brown recorded eight points during that run to fuel another big day for her. The Eagles fought back though scoring the next six points to cut the lead to nine. North Carolina Central would could the lead to as little as eight in the first half and that was the margin at halftime with the Bulls leading, 27-19.

The Bulls began the second half on a 19-8 run as the Bulls took their largest lead of the game at 19 with a three from Rachelle Matthys at the 14:18 mark. However, the Eagles again fought back cutting the deficit to nine twice in the final four minutes before the Bulls hung on for the victory.

“We are very fortunate to walk out with a victory tonight,” said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. "I thought we started well, but we need to do a better job taking care of the basketball and finishing out games.”

The Bulls were led by 19 points from Brown, who was named to the Lady Pirate Invitational All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the tournament. Brown had a double-double as she also had a career-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Fortman added 17 points, eight rebounds, a career-high six assists and three blocked shots for UB.
