Bulls Fall In Lady Pirate Invitational Opener
Rachelle Matthys has a career-high 28 points on eight three pointers
The Bulls and Aggies both got off to a quick start to the game as the two teams had already combined for 45 points just nine minutes in to the game. Redshirt junior Rachelle Matthys was deadly from behind the arc early on hitting two of her career-high eight three pointers in the first 10 minutes of action. The game remained tight as a three-point play by sophomore Bridgette Kendricks pulled the Bulls within one with 4:00 left in the first half, however the Aggies ended the half on a 13-2 run to go up by 12 as the first ended.
The Bulls attempted to come back in the second half as Matthys continued her hot shooting as Matthys added another two threes, one that pulled the Bulls within seven with 14:48 left. The Aggies then scored the next seven points before Matthys ended that run with another three pointer. UB would cut it to nine with 9:46 left in the half until the Aggies went on a 9-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 17. UB got it back down to single digits thanks to Matthys and Kourtney Brown who scored half of her 20 points in the final 10 minutes.
“We lost tonight because we could not hold on to the basketball,” said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. “I thought we competed in every other aspect of the game, even outplaying our opponent in some of those aspects, but you can’t win when you turn it over 31 times.”
Matthys led the Bulls wither her 28 points, including an 8-of-11 performance from behind the arc. The eight three pointers are one off the school record for threes in a game and they also tie her for fifth in Mid-American Conference history for three-pointers in a game.
Brown continued her tremendous start to the season as she recorded her third 20-point performance of the season with 20 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor. Brown also had a game-high nine rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Brown also added two assists and two blocks. Sophomore Jessica Fortman added 11 points and eight rebounds, while senior Dortae Freeman had a career-high seven assists.
North Carolina A&T also had two players with 20-point performances as Amber Bland finished with 25 points and Ta’Wanna Cook added 21 points and seven assists.
The Bulls will be back in action tomorrow as they play North Carolina Central in the consolation game of the Lady Pirate Invitational at 5:00 pm. The Eagles lost in their opener to East Carolina, 98-39.
