BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team put forth its second straight dominating defensive performance as the Bulls picked up their first home win with a 63-45 victory over Delaware, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. The Bulls evened their record up to 2-2 with the victory.

After the Bulls hit the first basket of the game, Delaware took a lead by scoring the next five points. The Blue Hens continued to lead by three at the 15:24 mark when the Bulls went on an 8-0 run, including four points from redshirt sophomore Kourtney Brown. The Blue Hens cut the lead to one before the Bulls scored eight straight points to go up by nine. Delaware again came back getting the lead to as little as three with 3:15 left in the half, but the Bulls responded by ending the half on a 12-2 run to take a 13-point lead into the lockerroom.

The Bulls continued their strong play in the second half as Delaware cut the deficit to 10 early in the half, but that is as close as it would get. With a 13-point advantage at the 12:56 mark the Bulls went on a 14-7 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 20 on a jumper from Brittany Hedderson. One of the key baskets in that run came on an in bounds play with one second on the shot clock as freshman Ephesia Holmes found Rachelle Matthys on the baseline for a jumper. The Blue Hens would get the lead down to 15 with 39 seconds to go, but freshman Keshia Primo converted on a conventional three-point play, scoring the first three points of her career, for the final 18-point victory.

“I am very pleased with our performance today,” said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. “I thought our transition defense was very strong as well as our half court defense. Most of the time we were able to fill up the lanes and hold Delaware to one shot.”

The Bulls were led by Brown who tied her career high of 22 points, which she set on Wednesday night at Youngstown State. Brown had a career high 11 field goals as she converted on 11-of-14 from the field. She also added five rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist. Brown becomes the first UB player to record 20 points in back-to-back games since the 2005-06 season when Heather Turner had 21 points in back-to-back games against Akron and Kent State. The 11 field goals by Brown are also tied for the 11th most in school history.

Hedderson had her first game in double figures as she had a fantastic all-around game with 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and seven steals. The seven steals are tied for the fifth most in school history. Hedderson tied sophomore Jessica Fortman for the team high in rebounds. Fortman also added eight points, three assists and a blocked shot. Just one game after UB got scoring from 11 individuals, the Bulls had another balanced scoring attack as 10 UB players found their way into the scoring column.
