UB Women's Basketball Adds Two Transfers

Forward Kim Kilpela academically dismissed from team

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo head women's basetball coach Cheryl Dozier has announced junior transfers Serena Stanbury (Miami, FL/Miami-Dade Community College) and Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe (Strathmore, Wellington, New Zealand/University of Hawaii) as new additions to the Bulls' 2000-01 roster.

Stanbury, a 6-1 forward, was a two-year starter at Miami-Dade Community College where she averaged 4.3 points and 6.9 rebounds. A smart, quick defender, she finished last season ranked fifth in the state of Florida in blocks with 2.51 per game. She was a second-team All-Conference selection as a freshman and a member of the FCCAA All-Academic Team.

"Coming from junior college, Serena will immediately give us more depth at the post position," commented Dozier. "She's very athletic, and the biggest thing she will help us with is rebounding."

McMeeken-Ruscoe played the past two seasons at the University of Hawaii, and per NCAA regulations, will sit out the 2000-01 season. A 5-9 guard, she averaged 5.3 points and hit 23 three-pointers for the Wahines last season, including a school record six three-pointers in one game. McMeeken-Ruscoe was a WAC Scholar-Athlete and a member of the All-WAC Academic Team.

"Because Kate has to sit out, I feel good that once we lose our three guards after this season, she'll be able to step in and fill one of those spots right away," said Dozier. "She has a scoring mentality, and she has two good years of experience from playing at Hawaii."

Stanbury and McMeeken-Ruscoe will join the Bulls in the fall, along with fellow newcomers Jana Richtrova (Benesov U Prahy, Czech Republic/Genesee Community College), Jessica Kochendorfer (Allen, MI/Quincy) and Virginia Jennings (Nashville, MI/Hastings), who signed last fall to attend UB.

Additionally, Dozier announced that sophomore Kim Kilpela (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) has been dismissed from the team due to academic reasons. Kilpela was the team's second-leading scorer last season, averaging 10.3 points per game. A member of the MAC All-Freshman Team, she also averaged 7.0 rebounds per game and blocked 22 shots.
