Buscaglia Takes Manhattan Post

Winningest coach in UB women's basketball history assumes new post after eight years

The University at Buffalo Division of Athletics has announced the resignation of head women's basketball coach Sal Buscaglia to take the head coaching position at Manhattan College.

Buscaglia has coached the UB women's basketball team since the 1990-91 season and has helped lead the Bulls to five 20-win seasons during his tenure.

"The achievements of my teams at UB is something I am very proud of," said Buscaglia. "I would like to thank the administration and staff for their support and especially would like to thank the wonderful young women I have had the pleasure to coach over the years at UB.

"The opportunity to coach at Manhattan, a highly-recognized men's and women's program in New York, is something I could not pass up. They certainly have indicated to me their commitment to success. The potential to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament, something they achieved three short years ago is very exciting to me."

Buscaglia came to UB from nearby Hilbert College where he led the Hawks to a 253-55 record in 12 seasons. In his eight seasons at UB he led the Bulls to a 155-71 record and twice was named New York State Division I Coach of the Year.

His teams earned four conference championships during his tenure and compiled the top grade point average among all athletic teams at UB this past fall.

"We are disappointed to be losing Coach Buscaglia, his leadership put our women's basketball program on a national level," said Associate Athletic Director Bob Arkeilpane, the Officer in Charge during Nelson Townsend's absence. "We are excited for Coach Buscaglia and wish him the best of luck."
