Women's Basketball Adds Two to Roster

Junior college transfers Amy Kucheran and Tahcahrah Owens round out incoming class

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo head women's basketball coach Cheryl Dozier has announced the signing of two junior college transfers who will continue their athletic and academic careers at UB in 2003-04. Post players Amy Kucheran (North Delta, British Columbia/College of Southern Idaho) and Tahcahrah (Ta-CAR-ah) Owens (Decatur, AL/Northwest-Shoals Community College) join freshmen guards Antionetta Young (Bessemer, AL/Jess Lanier), Dina Atanas (Brantford, Ontario/St. John's College), Kelly Calderone (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) and Belinda Gibb (Perth, Australia/Willetton), who all signed during the early signing period in November, to round out the Bulls' incoming class.

Kucheran is a 6'1" post player who averaged 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in 2002-03 at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, ID. In her two-year career with the Golden Eagles, Kucheran averaged 6.2 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 40.2 percent from the floor. Owens stands 5'10" and averaged 13 points and nine rebounds per game last season at Northwest-Shoals Community College near her hometown of Decatur, AL. In her freshman season in 2001-02, she helped the Patriots to a 26-6 record and a conference championship title. Owens carries a 3.5 grade point average and plans to become a pharmacist. She chose UB largely for its nationally-recognized pharmacy program, ranked as one of the top pharmacy schools in the United States.

"Both Amy and Tahcahrah will add depth in our post area, and both coming from junior colleges will have the experience to step in and contribute immediately," said Dozier. "Tahcahrah will definitely bring more athleticism to our team, and because of her athleticism, she is always around the basket. She can get to the rim and rebound and get up and down the floor and bother players defensively. Amy, on the other hand, is a banger. She's a very hard worker and is relentless in the low-post, both offensively and defensively. She's a very physical player who is not afraid of contact."

The Bulls finished with an 18-11 overall record during the 2002-03 season, doubling their win total from the previous year, and they advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.
