BUFFALO, NY – Redshirt sophomore Kourtney Brown was one of 11 players to be named to the 2008-09 Academic All-MAC Team, which the league office announced this morning. Brown becomes the first Academic All-MAC selection for UB since the 2002-03 season.

Brown, a computer engineering major with a 3.203 GPA, led the Bulls in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocks this past season as she became UB’s single-season scoring leader with 532 points. Her 220 made field goals on the season are also a school record and she finished in the top 10 in other single season school records such as rebounds (261) and blocks (62). Brown was named MAC East Player of the Week three times this past season and was also named to the MAC’s All-Tournament team after she helped lead the Bulls to their first ever conference semifinals appearance.

Brown had 12 20-point performances on the season, including two 30-point games, which she had against the two division winners, recording a career-high 31 points against Ball State. The Solon, OH native was also the only player in the conference to finish in the top four in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
