Martin Wins MAC Award

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo women's basketball player Rachel Martin (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) has been named as the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league has announced.

Martin, a 6-1 senior center, got the start for the Bulls as UB's leading rebounder and second-leading scorer Jessica Kochendorfer (Allen, MI/Quincy) sat out the game with a concussion suffered earlier in the week and responded by setting career-highs of 22 points and 17 rebounds as she led the Bulls to a 72-53 win in the first round of the Mid-American Conference women's basketball tournament. The win advanced the Bulls to Cleveland's Gund Arena for the first time since 2000 to play in the second round where they were eliminated Wednesday night, 81-63, by Ball State. Martin, a psychology major with a 3.36 grade point average, ended her UB career in that game with nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks in 16 minutes as she again was thrust into the starting lineup due to Kochendorfer's injury. She finished the season averaging 5.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
